Principal's Message

We're almost done with our first full 5 day week and its been wonderful getting into classrooms and watching your childrens' curiousity as they learn new content, review some of what they've already learned, and share a bit about themselves as they get to know their classmates and teachers.

Whether it's Kindergarten students learning how to make their way through center-based work or our 5th graders learning about volume, our students are engaged in meaningful learning as they adjust into the school year.

I look forward to connecting with you next Tuesday, September 16th for our Back to School Night from 6-7:30 PM. It's a bring your family interactive evening.

A few quick reminders/updates about the evening:

  • It's not intended to be a parent/caregiver/conference, but rather an opporutnity for you to see your child's school, meet the teacher, and work your way around the school.
  • Please be cognizant of the amount of time you spend with our educators. There are a lot of families for them to speak to.
  • Please be sure that your students/children are respectful and with you throughout the evening-walking through the halls respectfully, together with you. Children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the building.
  • Be sure to visit with our PTO, Mental Health from Advocates, and even a table on train safety.
  • Finally both 5th and 6th grades will have two separate formal sessions as part of the evening. They'll take place in your chld's classroom at the following times:

  • 6:15-6:30PM
  • 7:15-7:30PM

  • The presentations will be the same at both times so you only need to attend one time for your child. Your children should attend the presentations with you. We are offering two presentations as we know there are a lot of families with siblings.

We look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 16th-6-7:30.

Spotlight on Kindergarten

The beginning of Kindergarten has been so much fun! We have been creating our classroom community, building friendships, practicing routines, and learning all about Douglas!

At morning meeting, we have been participating in activities to learn each other’s names and all about our classmates. During math, we have started exploring a variety of math manipulatives including; pattern blocks, unifix cubes, dominos, counting bears and geoblocks. In literacy, we have read many stories paired with activities to help us learn about sharing, letters of the alphabet, school tools, and building a classroom community.

We discussed our hopes and dreams for Kindergarten which led to the creation of our classroom rules. We worked together to brainstorm how to make our classroom a safe and kind learning environment.

Our favorite way to learn is of course through…PLAY! While playing we learn how to problem solve, build friendships, practice communication skills, use our imagination, and explore creativity. During choice time, students can choose from many play experiences including building with different materials, housekeeping, writing and drawing, imaginative play, puzzles, and games.

Our youngest learners are beginning SOAR as Douglas students!

Social Emotional Learning

From our counselor, Mrs. Bonnell:

Welcome and welcome back to all of our students and families. It has been so nice to see everyone back at Dougals. Over 24 new students were able to eat lunch with other new students to Douglas and make connections and learn from each other at the new student lunches.

I’ve had the opportunity to go into many classrooms to get to know the students and teach them about what it means to be a school counselor. Students are learning about being
an emotion detective to spot their feelings and how to persevere through productive struggle.

In Kindergarten, you can ask students about what feeling spot they are in
In 1st and 2nd grade, you can ask students what it means to feel welcome and belong
In 4th grade, you can ask students about multiple intelligences and what it means to be smart.

In the 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade, you can ask students about the productive struggle activity using string or rectangles.

We hope to see everyone at Back to School Night Please visit the counseling suite on the third floor and fill out a post it note to show how you SOAR at home and school.
